I PROVIDE COUNSELLING FOR

Acquired/Traumatic Brain Injury/Post-Concussion Syndrome (ABI/TBI/PCS)

Whether you suspect you may have or have been diagnosed with an ABI, TBI or PCS, I am committed to assisting you to navigate resources, work through the many changes ABI, TBI or PCS has brought you and develop a plan of support for improved wellbeing.

What is an ABI/TBI and PCS?
Is a concussion a brain injury? Yes. A concussion is a brain injury which can be caused by a sudden acceleration of the head and neck resulting from a blow or contact to the body. You do not need to lose consciousness to have sustained a concussion.

Concussions can occur from many different activities including falls, assault, motor vehicle collisions, sports or being struck by an object. Symptoms can appear immediately or, in some cases, days following the initial injury (OBIA.ca)

Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) is the persistence of concussion symptoms beyond the ‘normal’ course of recovery. In some cases, PCS may be diagnosed if symptoms last longer than 1-2 months (Concussionfoundation.org)

Addictions

Therapy can assist you in working through problematic behaviours and choices often associated with addictions. Substance use, gambling, eating disorders or shopping addictions can negatively impact our self-esteem and relationships. Through DBT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing and other modern best-practices, we can begin to understand the cause and effect of your addiction(s). Therapy will be collaborative, non-judgemental and confidential.

Myths about addiction

Addiction is a sign of weakness
Many factors play into the development of an addiction, including psychological conditions beyond an individual’s control or choice, such as mental illness, family history of addiction, and/or a dependence brought on by drugs prescribed for an injury/condition.

However, Dr. Gabor Maté argues that addiction is often the result of a lack of nurturing during childhood, trauma or experience of loss. Despite the difference of opinion, addiction nonetheless may mean that a person suffering from addiction may not have the ability to address the addiction on their own.

Willpower or just quitting is the answer
Depending on the substance and length of time someone has been reliant on a substance, the physical and psychological withdraw symptoms can become life threatening, meaning an abrupt stop could shock the brain and body to the point of causing severe medical distress, and even death.

Often times substance usage is a way to cope with and/or avoid stress, triggers from trauma and/or discomfort. Therapy can provide healthier tools and resources to manage stressors, thereby helping people have more sustainable ways to deal with the problems in life.

I recognize that no one wakes up in the morning and says they are going to be an alcoholic, be depressed, be debilitated with anxiety, etc. Life is hard sometimes and we all struggle.
